PMSA 2023 Annual Conference

7 Sessions We Are Looking Forward to at the 2023 PMSA Conference

In the last week of May 2023, our team will head to Southern California for the Pharmaceutical Management Science Association’s 47th Annual Conference. The PMSA Conference is one of the best events in the world for pharmaceutical data professionals to meet and share knowledge. This year’s event will take place May 21–24 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, and Claritas Rx is proud to be an event sponsor.

Below are seven of the sessions we look forward to seeing.

Troy Sarich’s Monday Keynote

Monday, May 22 at 8:45 a.m.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals Chief Global Commercial Data Science Officer Troy Sarich will deliver the Monday keynote, “Transforming the Future of Health through Purposeful Innovation – and a Lot of Data!”

Sarich is a 25-year veteran of the global pharmaceutical sector and is currently responsible for growing Janssen’s data science, commercial data, real-world evidence, digital health and precision medicine capabilities.

His keynote will outline his vision for a very near future in which advanced analytics, machine learning and AI tools will unlock new opportunities for business growth.

Novel Data for Novel Questions

Monday, May 22 at 11:00 a.m.

Pfizer’s Bennett Davidson and Daniela Rosales, alongside Deloitte Consulting’s Shubham Kumar and Kevin Coltin, will speak about Pfizer’s use of analytics in the development and rollout of the company’s COVID-19 vaccine, Comirnaty, and therapeutic, Paxlovid.

“To support the objective of expanding access to Covid-19 vaccination and treatment to as many people as possible in such a dynamic landscape, Pfizer has piloted and implemented a number of innovative analytics approaches that often leverage non-standard data sources to answer non-standard questions,” conference organizers write.

Expect a fascinating conversation on the ways data analytics drove decision-making not just at Pfizer, but among healthcare providers, lawmakers and public health organizations.

Physician Decision-Making and Long Term Brand Effects

Monday, May 22 at 2:30 p.m.

Eli Lilly and Company VP of Decision Analytics and Optimization Chad Dau and Sentier Analytics Cofounder and CEO Rich Sokolosky will present on the ways pharmaceutical companies can measure the impacts external drivers have on market behaviors and physicians’ habits.

Organizations have long measured the impacts of direct marketing and sales on physician behaviors, the organizers write. But by identifying and measuring external factors — the promotional spend among competitors, social conditions — in physician decision-making, pharmaceutical companies can add another layer of intelligence.

“With machine learning algorithms and higher computing capabilities, it is now possible to estimate the importance of these factors and their long term effects on the brand,” organizers write. “This information can then be used to develop more effective strategies for inline brands, pipeline, and launches.”

Applying Causal Inference Techniques to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Pharmaceutical Marketing Campaigns

Monday, May 22 at 3:40 p.m.

Novo Nordisk Senior Data Scientist Devika Kaushal will give a presentation on how pharmaceutical organizations can measure the effectiveness of their marketing campaigns after the fact.

Kaushal will discuss some non-experimental causal inference techniques these marketing teams can deploy in lieu of A/B testing. These include propensity score matching and propensity score re-weighting.

“The intuition for propensity score matching is we look at each person who saw our campaign, find their long-lost counterfactual identical twin, and check for any difference in their outcome,” organizers write. “We can discuss this further in the session!”

John Thompson’s Tuesday Keynote

Tuesday, May 23 at 8:45 p.m.

Ernst & Young Global Head of Artificial Intelligence John K. Thompson will kick off Tuesday with a keynote presentation on building and managing high-performing analytics teams — a subject he wrote a book on in 2020.

Thompson will bring 35-plus years of experience in data analytics and AI to this presentation.

Thinkers360 listed Thompson’s 2022 book, “Data For All,” among its top 50 books to read in 2023.

The Waves of Change Panel Discussion

Tuesday, May 23 at 3:15 p.m.

Tuesday afternoon will feature a panel discussion on how pharmaceutical data has evolved so rapidly and will continue to do so.

“Those who lead teams or manage commercial ops decisions with high stakes are facing fiercer leadership challenges than ever before,” organizers write. “This session will provide a real-time, real-talk approach to understanding the challenges of leading at the executive level in commercial pharma.”

CareSet CEO Laura Shapland and Bayser President JP Tsang will moderate the discussion.

Panelists will include:

  • Eli Lilly VP of Decision Analytics and Optimization Chad Dau.
  • UCB Global Head of Advanced Analytics Cindie Dilley.
  • Amgen VP of Commercial Data & Analytics Anthony Pugliese.
  • Merck Human Health Chief Analytics Officer and Head of Digital Solutions Abhishek Singh.

Advancing Healthcare Equity

Wednesday, May 24 at 11:05 a.m.

Komodo Health VP of Data Product Paul Gurney will give what should be a fascinating case study on demographic insights in retinal disease.

“The depth and prevalence of racial disparities are coming to the forefront of U.S. healthcare,” the organizers write. “Measuring and ultimately addressing care disparities facing patients of color requires a deeper view of real-world patient data.”

Gurney’s case study will demonstrate what these differences look like in the treatment of retinal disease patients from a variety of demographic backgrounds.
